The Flatt Pavin: Pavane and Galliard
( John Johnson )
This is an arrangement of The Flatt Pavin for two lutes by the English composer John Johnson (ca. 1540 - 1594). The piece includes a stately Pavan and a faster Galliard. Both Pavan and Galliard offer a fine interplay between both guitars with the possibility to show off a bit in the virtuoso elaboration of the themes.
John Johnson was a lutenist at the court of Elizabeth I, where he brought the art of lute ensemble play to a higher level. He is seen as the founder of the English Lute School, with John Dowland as its most well known representative.
