Day One: Audience at Masterclasses
The first day, the masterclasses were held in the auditoria of the Concordia Theatre. Major advantage of this setup is, that you can drop in as a spectator without disturbing the class. In this way we attended a masterclass by Denis Azabagic who counselled one of the competitors (I guess he was a conservatory student) during playing Rodrigo's Invocacion y Danza. We had just heard this piece during Kresimir Bedek's recital, so its sound and structure were familiar.
It is really extraordinary that such a young guitarist plays a piece of this level. Apparently the standard of guitar playing has reached quite a level during the last thirty years.
Azabagic had much to say to his performance in a both professional and friendly way. With many directions he brought structure and growth in the student's interpretation. Hats off for the student who immediately integrated Azabagic's comments in his play. It was a shame that he did not pass the first round with this piece.
