Almain

Francis Cutting

This is a cheerful Almain by the English composer Francis Cutting. The piece has a clear structure of three sections with each a variation in the so called "Division" style which was widely used in Renaissance music."Division" comes to dividing the note value of the melody line in elaborations in smaller note values.

We have little biographical data about Francis Cutting, he lived somewhere between 1571 and 1603. The pieces he left feature a distinctive style and often have cheerful themes, as you can hear in this Almain.
