Choix de mes Fleurs Cheries: Le Narcisse
Mauro Giuliani
The seventh movement from the Choix de mes Fleurs Cheries, ou Le Bouquet Emblematique by Mauro Giuliani (1781 -1829), one of the conversions to modern notation of a near manuscript from the Boie Collection. In the description of Le Myrte I tell more about this adventure.
Le Narcisse -the Narcissus- is a well known spring flower with trumpet shaped yellow flowers. The Greek mythology tells the story of Narcissus -the namer of the flower- who was so vain that he fell in love with his own reflection, his image so to say, lots of people actually are in love with their image! He died yearning, because a reflection does not say loving things to you.
For his tribute to the Narcissus, Giuliani borrowed quite a lot of thematic material from Sonatina No. 3, which you can finde elsewhere on this site. A bit of musical Narcissism, I guess?
