Gerbe des Fleurs
José Ferrer
This piece was composed by the Spanish composer Jose Ferrer (1835-1916), a contemporary of Francisco Tarrega and Miguel Llobet. The piece is part of a little suite, titled Gerbe des Fleurs, the Flower Basket. It is fun to play, not too hard, with a variety of moods.
Ferrer composed a large number of pieces in romantic 19th century style. The first part -Cantilene Espagnole- has phrasing which gives it a Spanish character. The following Pavane is a more or less free form which also became popular with later Impressionistic composers. The Mazurka provides straightforward waltzing. The final movement -the Berceuse- is a romantic song.
