Guardame las Vacas
Luis de Narvaez
This piece is one of the first examples of a Theme with Variations from the Renaissance era. The theme is a Spanish folk song which apparently was quite well-known in the time of the vihuelists, because several composers made arrangements of the song. Included here is the version by Luis de Narvaez.
Luis de Narvaez was a 16th century vihuelist and composer at the court of Philip II of Spain. In 1538 he published a book with a number of his compositions and arrangements, including Guarda me las Vacas.
