Gymnopédie No 1
Eric Satie
Eric Satie (1866-1925) was one of the well-known French impressionistic composers. His career for a large part took place in the cabarets of Montmartre in Paris. He introduced a great variety of musical forms in his own style.
He composed the Gymnopedies after a joke: One evening in the cabaret Le Chat Noir he introduced himself as Gymnopediste and felt that he had to prove himself to be a musician-gymnopediste. Gymnopedies are in fact ancient greek sacral dances.
