Marizapalos

Gaspar Sanz

Marizapolos is a 17th century spanish Sarabande-like piece, composed by Gaspar Sanz (1640 - 1710). It resembles the Zarabanda from Canciones y Danzas, but has a much more complex structure. Consequently it is harder to play.

Gaspar Sanz originated from the district of Aragon and taught theology at the university of Salamanca. The Canarios is part of a musical instruction book for guitar -Instruccion Sobre la Guitarra Espanola- which contains besides a lot of technical excercises a large number of arrangements of popular song and dance tunes from that time.

This setting has been made by a later guitarist, because the complexity of the piece clearly differs from the original Sanz pieces. Some research showed, that Sainz de da Maza added some to Sanz' original.
