Musette in D

Johann Sebastian Bach

Anna Magdalena Wülcken, the second wife of Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 - 1750), was a professional singer and could play the keyboard. Bach collected and wrote the well known Notenbüchlein for her, this Musette is one of its pieces.

The Notenbüchlein is an interesting collection of short and gallant instrumental pieces and vocal works which were used by Anna Magdalena herself for playing and singing.

Bach did not write all pieces himself, the Notenbüchlein contains contributions by for instance Johann Adolf Hasse and Francois Couperin. They noted down their pieces in the Bach family guest book, and Bach copied them here.

This Musette does not look very "Bachian", but it is a nice little piece to play. You'll find it in many collections for beginners on the piano as well.

I should mention one striking performance of the Musette: Walter (later Wendy) Carlos played it on Moog Synthesizer in the Switched on Bach albums.
