Overture

Fernando Carulli

This time we have a little more extended piece by Fernando Carulli (1770 - 1841), the Overture Op. 6 Nr. 1.

I came across the piece via Youtube, where I found a nice performance by an unknown Chinese guitarist.

The Overture has a clear opera atmosphere and offers quite some time of enjoyable play. Rumor states that the piece is an arrangement of a section of one of Rossini's operas, but I have not been able to verify that.

A short introduction in moderate tempo forms the entry of the piece. Then the main theme develops in various sections, all in A major but a small middle part, which is in A minor. After the A minor section, the piece seems to be Da Capo al Fine, but take care, Carulli has played you some tricks there, presenting significant differences. That's why the piece is four pages rather than three.

Considering the lenght of the piece and the clear section structure, it is a nice practice for playing by heart.

The piece contains the typical Carullian devices like Alberti bass and bass and melody in octaves. Play the piece with lots of variation in timbre and dynamics to prevent the boring sewing-machine effect.
