Romanze
Johann Kaspar Mertz
This is a Romanza from the collection Bardenklaenge Op. 13 (Bard's Songs) by the 19th century Hungarian composer Johann Kaspar Mertz (1806 - 1856). His music is in the style late-Classical up to early-Romantic. He was a celebrated guitarist and a very prolific composer (he composed over a hundred extensive works for the guitar). He performed all over Europe, which is quite an endeavour with bad roads and bumping stage-coaches of the day.
His wife Josephine Plantin was a concert pianist. That might explain why his work contains so many pianistic devices which you can hear with Romantic composers like Chopin and Schumann.
This Romanza is a kind of song, preceeded by a short introduction. The piece contains many accompaniment forms in triplets, which require some practice to perform smoothly "under" the melody. Apart from a few excursions to the higher positions, it is a well playable piece. A nice opportunity for a Romantic performance!
