Salut d' Amour
Edward Elgar
Edward Elgar is mainly known by his symphonic works, in particular the Pomp and Circumstance Marches, from which for example the well known song Land of Hope and Glory originates.
He wrote the piece with the name Liebesgruess as a tribute to his fiancee. He started with a piano version and composed a piano/violin version, hoping to earn some money from publication. Unfortunately the publisher and the players did not like the name Liebesgruess that much (Prussia was not that popular in England in those days). Translation into French did the trick. With the title Salut d' Amour, this piece soon became one of Elgar's most well-known and beloved themes.
