Suite in D Major
Robert de Visée
This is a suite for baroque guitar, composed by the French composer Robert de Visée (1650 - 1725). Robert de Visée was a court musician to Louis XIV -le Roi du Soleil- and earned a quite modest living in comparison with for example his friend and colleague Lully. De Visée wrote works for lute, renaissance guitar and chamber music ensembles.
The suite consists of the sections Prelude, Allemande, Courante, Sarabande, Gavotte, Menuet en Rondeau, Menuet, Bourree and Gigue. It is a well known piece which was already played by Segovia, many years ago. As with many baroque pieces, the thrills and ornaments determine the playing challenge. With moderate ornaments, the suite is fun to play as well.
