Variations over Five Centuries
Mark de Gooijer
I am not quite a composer myself, which does not mean, however. that I never gave it a go.
One of the occasions for it was a second grade examination for the School of Music. On this level, an own composition was compulsory. So I started work with guitar, pencil and score paper.
The result was my only composition until today, a theme with variations. Not with the usual technical tricks but in time, style periods. There is a variation for Renaissance, Baroque, Romantic Era and ’Contemporary’.
I must admit that I did not knew anything about musical and composition theory with this composition attempt.
Nevertheless the comittee considered it a nice piece of work which positively contributed to the final result: Passed!
