Villanos
Gaspar Sanz
This Villanos is a 17th century spanish dance, composed by Gaspar Sanz (1640 - 1710). Gaspar Sanz originated from the district of Aragon and taught theology at the university of Salamanca.
The Villanos is part of a musical instruction book for guitar -Instruccion Sobre la Guitarra Espanola- which contains besides a lot of technical excercises a large number of arrangements of popular song and dance tunes from that time.
A Villanos originally was a peasant dance from the Spanish countryside. Villano means peasant, countryman. In Sanz' time the Villanos became a stylized movement of a Spanish baroque suite, just like the Minuet in the French suites.
The piece is built on a simple theme which is varied in several ways. You have to add the typical baroque trills to your taste.
