Vailais Guitar Week

In 1982 I had a summer vacation together with my wife in Meyringen in Switzerland. Meyringen is located in a very picturesque valley of the Aare in the vicinity of the skiing areas around the Jungfrau glacier. Nearby is the Reichenbachfall where in the stories of Sir Conan Doyle the famous Sherlock Holmes had his last fight with the dreaded Dr. Moriarty.
It is a beautiful region and it was a joy to play a little guitar in the sun on the balcony of the apartment, provided the weather was good, of course. Peace and quiet (in summer it is not quite crowded in the ski-village Meyringen), a bit of sun and a beautiful view. What do you wish for more?
We made a few trips over the mountain passes with the Postauto, the famous Swiss autobus. One day we passed the Grimselpass that is situated on the border of the Berner Oberland and the canton of Valais. High in the mountains it was quite misty and bleak, almost gloomy.
Until we descended into the valley, a green and sunny paradise.
“Yes, in Valais the weather is much better!” the driver explained enthusiastically and made some casual remarks about the addresses of a few boarding houses in the area.
He was quite right, because the canton of Valais is situated at the south end of the Jungfrau Glacier and thus catches some of the beautiful weather of the Mediterranean.
The village of Guttet-Feschel in Valais again this year is the background for a special event: the Valais Guitar Week.
What’s that, the Valais Guitar Week? A guitar competition? A guitar festival? No... it is a feast of the guitar, a specialty for guitarists!
The first edition in 2011 was a great success. A small group of guitarists experienced an unforgettable musical holiday. A few photo’s in this year’s brouchure bear witness.
Because of the success the event is continued. So there is a second edition of the Valais Guitar Week. From 13 to 20 August 2011 in Guttet-Feschel in Valais, Switzerland.
