Julian Arcas

The music by Julian Arcas is mostly based on traditional Spanish motifs and dances. That yielded a number of characteristic compositions.

Sheet Music

The Bolero is a traditional Spanish dance in three-four time. The characteristic rhythm is obvious in the introduction and the refrains. In between the piece provides room for variation. Passages like measure 12 and 13 require practice in the right-hand fingering in order to perform them smoothly.

Arcas’ compositions were mainly based on the national Spanish folk- and flamenco music. The Madrileno, a dance from Madrid in quadruple time, is an example. The technical challenge of this piece lies in the excursions to the higher positions which require practice to perform them in tempo

The piece is dedicated to the postillion -hence the gallop sections in the music- from the district of Rioja. La Roija is a province in the north of Spain, where the nice Rioja wines are produced.
