I like to listen to the music of the nineteenth-century composer Johann Kaspar Mertz (1806 – 1856) and have been working on quite a few of his pieces. Excellent material for recording.
First of all, the Dame’s Violet (Estikek in Hungarian). The Dame’s Violet is registered as Opus 2. I have recorded all five of its movements: Andante Grazioso, Scherzo piu Allegro, Adagio Lamentoso, Rondino Allegretto and Allegretto Giusto. The recordings date from 2013.
Three pieces stem from a remarkable collection of Kukuk or Musikalische Rundschau that was published under Mertz’s name, presumably after his death. It is a kind of Cees Hartog collection of folk and opera melodies known at the time. I recorded Der Rothe Sarafan (Russian folk song), Steyrer Heimweh (Styrian melody) and Abschied von der Sennerin (Austrian folk melody) as an exercise for a performance session.
Two Nocturnes complete this Mertz session.
Attention;-) One at a time!
