Thomas Robinson

Thomas Robinson’s Schoole of Music

Writing a meaningful biography of Thomas Robinson is no simple job, because little is known about his whereabouts. His life span, 1560 – 1610, is a historical guess. Fortunately, he added some clues on the dedication pages of his compositions that enable to date a few facts. From these front pages, we know that he worked as a music instructor at the royal Danish court in Copenhagen and Helsingør.

His most famous work, The Schoole of Musicke, was published in 1603 and was considered a standard instruction manual for instruments like the Lute, the Bandora and the Viola da Gamba. It contains many charming pieces that embellish the instruction.
