Jose Ferrer

The Spanish composer José Ferrer Esteve de Fujadas (1835-1916) was a contemporary of Francisco Tarrega and Miguel Llobet. He wrote a large number of pieces in the nineteenth century Romantic style.

Ferrer was born in Montgri and passed away in Barcelona. He studied guitar with José Brocá and combined his solo career with teaching at the Académie Internationale de Musique in Paris and the conservatory in Barcelona. As a guitarist he was active in the genre of Musique du Salon in Paris.

Sometimes Ferrer’s compositions are criticised as being unoriginal and rigid in form. For what I know of his music, I do not agree, it’s fun to play and quite characteristic for the musique de salon in 19th century Spain. I think that the many ladies that he dedicated his pieces to will agree!
