100 Martha (Von Flotow arr. Mertz)

Friedrich von Flotow

Martha, oder Der Markt zu Richmond is a romantic-comical opera in four acts by Friedrich von Flotow (1812 – 1883) on a libretto by Friedrich Wilhelm Riese, based on a story by Jules-Henri Vernoy de Saint-Georges. Apparently, the librettist and the writer could get along well, because this combination often was the basis for Flotow’s operas. The premiere was in 1844.

The noblewoman Lady Harriet is bored with her life and disguises herself as the maidservant Martha. Thus, she draws the attention of a farmer that falls in love with her. Unfortunately, the social difference foils further action until it appears that the farmer in reality is a nobleman. All well that ends well!

Mertz’ arrangement appears a folk dance in a joyful tempo. Quite fitting with the theme of this opera.
