35 Les Huguenots (Meyerbeer arr. Mertz)

Giacomo Meyerbeer

Les Huguenots is an opera by Giacomo Meyerbeer (1791 – 1864) on a libretto by Eugene Scribe and Emile Deschamps. The opera was performed for the first time in 1836. The story behind is a king’s drama with as background the St. Bartholomew’s night in France (1572) in which many Huguenots were massacred for their belief. It is not very surprising that the opera has a tragical end.
