75 Norma (Bellini arr. Mertz)

Vincenzo Bellini

Norma is a tragical opera in two acts by Vincenzo Bellini (1801 – 1835) on a libretto by Felice Romani. Romani did not invent the story by himself, he leaned on a novel by Alexandre Soumet, titled Norma, or the Infanticide. It is a tragical love story that unfolds itself in the Roman era in the province of Gaul. The audience could enjoy this opera for the first time in 1831.

The music for the main character Norma is considered one of the biggest challenges for a soprano. Maria Callas was one of the great performers of these arias from Norma.

This arrangement by Mertz for a change is a triumphant march. Play it with at march tempo in accordance with its mood.
