Almain (Johnson)

This Alman -a german dance, also indicated by Allemande– for solo lute was composed by Robert Johnson. It is a joyful piece that shows a sharp contrast with the sometimes-miserable circumstances of those days. Being an artist under noble protection, you could not flee from this, because it was often a custom that you even followed your patron in battle. That was the reason why some musicians sometimes got the worst of it on the battlefield.

It is a dance in quadruple time that has two main themes. Every theme is varied once. Specifically, the interplay between the voices in the second theme is interesting. I arranged the piece for guitar duo which offers pleasant interplay.
