Fado is the fifth piece from Le Coin des Guitaristes Op. 119 by Kleynjans. Coin des Guitaristes translates as Guitarist’s Corner.
Fado (derived from the Latin word Fatum, fate) is the Portuguese life song that came to South America together with the colonists. The then Portuguese dictatorship promoted Fado as part of the popular soul, which is why the genre was taboo for a while after the democratization of Portugal in 1974.
The tempo indication lent et douloureux (slowly and sadly) indicates the character of this Fado. The challenges of this piece are the syncopations and the figures with eighth notes versus eighth triplets. That takes some trial and error to keep the melody smoothly.
