Guajiras Facil

A Guajira is music form that became popular in Spanish Zarzuelas. With its alternation of spoken and sung text, a Zarzuela resembles operas and operettas.

One of the characteristics of a Guajira is the characteristic rhythmic mix of 6/8 against 3/4. The rhythm you encounter in Gaspar Sanz’s (1640 – 1710) Canarios, but also in the song America from The West Side Story by Leonard Bernstein (1918 – 1999).

The German guitarist Hans Joachim Kaps (1942 – 2004) incorporated the Guajira rhythm into a relatively simple composition. Yes, relatively simple, because a solid pace makes it difficult.
