The first question that I would ask with the term Contemporary would be: “In what era do you mean?” I guess an answer would be: “Because musicologists do not know yet how to indicate the recent periods.” I have heard many classifications about the 20th century: Impressionism, Modernism, Neo-styles, Avant-Gardism, Serialism, Microtonality, Minimal Music and at the moment Contemporary Music.
Classification is tricky indeed!
