Jaime Bosch *

Biography

The Spanish/Catalan guitarist and composer Jaime Bosch y Renard (1826-1895) was also known as Jaques Bosch, because he worked for quite some time in France. As a consequence of his friendship with the painter Edouard Manet he had some connection to the Impressionistic art scene in Paris. He was a friend of the French composer Charles Gounod.

There is not much Impressionism in his work: most of his compositions bear the mark of the traditional Spanish folk music. With pieces like this, however, Bosch caused another guitar craze in Paris. Because he remained faithful to the roots of his music, Bosch was highly esteemed by Felipe Pedrell, the founder of the Spanish National School, which brought forth composers like Albeniz and Granados.
