La Juana is a piece from Diez Piezas Fugaces (10 fleeting pieces). The title looks like a woman’s name, but the dictionary gives me the translation marijuana or weed. This sheds a different light on the piece and therefore also makes the term “fleeting pieces” clearer. 😉 When you’re already high, heaven is closer.
The piece has the tempo indication tempo di gato, the tempo of an Argentine cat-like dance. Characteristic of the piece is the syncopated bass line that gives a feeling of a drone bass out of rhythm. The challenge is to make the melody rise above it all. Furthermore, it is important to be careful to play the 6/8 against 3/4 passages properly.
