The Lakes of Pontchartrain is a folk song from Louisiana in the United States. The city of New Orleans is located on the shores of the lake from the song.
The song dates from the nineteenth century. The melody is said to have been brought by soldiers fighting in Louisiana in 1812, which was still a French territory at the time. That’s probably why I found the song in a collection of Irish folk songs.
