Ribbon Dance (arr. Duarte)

John Playford published The Dancing Master for the first time in 1651, a collection of English folk dances with musical performance and dance instructions. This collection continued to expand until the last book appeared in 1728. John Duarte arranged some of these Playford Tunes for solo guitar.

Ribbon Dance is a dance form in which the dancer makes shapes with ribbons. They are said to be derived from Maypole dances, the merry fertility dances that were traditionally danced in the springtime.

Fragments of the melody strongly remind me of an English song from the sixties. The dance melody is varied in the bass line.
