The 19th century was the time of the Romantic era, which was clearly noticeable amongst artists. After the comparatively formal and rationalistic Classical era, there was room again for passionate feelings of joy and despair. It was not surprising that these powerful passionate moods caused many Romantic artist to commit suicide (all in imitation of the famous example Werther from the famous book by Goethe) or to end up in an asylum.
Numerous beautiful melodies were composed in those days. To a Wild Rose by Edward Mc Dowell is a striking example. Edward Mc Dowell, an American composer, died comparatively young. Originally written for solo piano, this piece turned into an enjoyable guitar duo. Hans added a good variation on the main theme.
