Vekselsang and Sarabande (Rung)

  1. Albumsblade 18 Vekselsang 0:59
  2. Albumsblade 19 Sarabande 2:38

Frederik Rung clearly had a piece for choir in mind when he composed Nr. 18 Vekselsang. The piece has two motives, one joyful and straight, the other lyrical and introvert. The form originates from church music, with a precentor and the congregation that serves as “background choir”, a kind of Antiphon.

A powerful motive envelopes two lyrical answering motives. Take care to play with contrast between the sections.

Imitation of old musical forms like the ones from Renaissance and Baroque were common practice amongst 19th century composers. Just like this Nr. 19 Sarabande by Frederik Rung. Rhythmically the piece resembles a Sarabande indeed, including the “division” of the melody. Concerning the harmonics, Rung remains faithful to his own era, you won’t hear it like this in Baroque music. The piece is a nice practice at a moderate tempo.
